Multnomah Channel Yacht Club (MCYC) history
- Formed in 1961 by a group of people interested in boating and family fun!
- Our original clubhouse was purchased in 1963 and moored at Larson's Moorage near the Sauvie Island Bridge
- MCYC moved to its present site in 1989 on the Multnomah Channel across from Sauvie Island approximately 3 miles east of Scappoose.
- Added new docks and covered slips
- Purchased our current floating clubhouse in 1996 and moved it to the current location
- MCYC now has a large floating clubhouse with dance floor, bar, restaurant size kitchen and seating for many happy members
The clubhouse is used by all the members and can be rented ($100.00) by a member for special occasions. MCYC does have covered moorage and boat slips up to 40 feet are often available for purchase.
MCYC is a nonprofit corporation chartered under the corporate laws of the State of Oregon, maintaining its principle office at 50990 Dike Road, Scappoose, Oregon. MCYC is a member of Columbia River Yachting Assn.
Membership in MCYC is for individuals and families who are interested in boating and water activities. Boat ownership is not a prerequisite to apply for membership. A membership is defined as a single person or couple and the minor children of that family. You must be 21 years of age to join. MCYC is an active club with monthly planned boating cruises and numerous social occasions at the clubhouse during the year. Some of the functions include:
- Annual Commodore's Ball
- St. Patrick's celebration
- Halloween party
- New Years Eve party
- Many casual parties during the year
MCYC is a club that is run by the membership. The ramp, clubhouse and moorage are member responsibilities. Members are required to host or co-host a social event at the club each year, attend CRYA Opening Day the 1 st Saturday in May, and to participate in work parties as needed.
Prospective applicants complete an MCYC application form and submit it to the Commodore, Secretary or Membership Chairperson for review and processing. Applicant must first attend a Board Meeting to be interviewed. Board meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month. They must also attend one General Membership Meeting and one social function. Their membership application will then be considered by the Board of Directors for final disposition. After approval by the MCYC Board of Directors the applicant will be installed as a member at the next general membership meeting, at which time the initiation fee, annual dues and voucher fees are due and payable. The initiation fee is $125.00, annual dues are $225.00 per family and vouchers (used like cash at the club) are $60.00 for each adult member. Upon applicant approval by the Board of Directors the Commodore will assign a member of the board or another designee to act as mentor to the new member for the purpose of helping said new member assimilate into the club and understand the rules and policies of the club. The new member is then installed at the next general membership meeting and given the Club burgee, membership book, name badges and membership cards. MCYC membership meetings are held on the third Friday of each month and all members are encouraged to attend. This is a business meeting with a light dinner before the meeting and socializing after our meeting.
Over the years, MCYC has built a reputation as the friendliest club in the Portland area. We always try to show our hospitality and kindness to everyone in the boating and non- boating community. Our membership will help educate new boaters and MCYC is family friendly. We are proud of our club.
We have members that are fishermen, water-skiers, experienced skippers and we have all sizes of boats, small and large. Our members come from all walks of life. We all have a common interest in boating and the area's wonderful and relaxing waterways.
